Prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there was a trend of gradual growth in bilateral trade with Tanzania. In 2021, the trade turnover between Ukraine and Tanzania amounted to USD 5.12 million.
Year 2023
According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, bilateral trade between Ukraine and Tanzania in 2023 totaled USD 5.05 million, representing a decrease of 74.4% compared to 2022 (USD 8.6 million).
Ukrainian exports to Tanzania during this period amounted to USD 1.08 million (a decrease of 93.7%), while imports reached USD 3.97 million (an increase of 51.5%), resulting in a negative trade balance for Ukraine of USD 2.89 million.
Ukraine exported to Tanzania: sunflower oil (USD 373,000 or 34.5% of exports), animal feed products (USD 258,000 or 23.9%), other food products (USD 114,000 or 10.6%), margarine (USD 74,000 or 6.8%), and electrical control and distribution equipment such as remote controls, panels, consoles, boards, and switchboards (USD 73,000 or 6.7%).
Ukraine imported from Tanzania: tropical fruits (USD 1.57 million or 39.5% of imports), raw tobacco and tobacco waste (USD 722,000 or 18.2%), coffee (USD 613,000 or 15.4%), seeds, fruits, and spores for sowing (USD 525,000 or 13.2%), and tea (USD 372,000 or 9.4%).
Year 2024
According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, the bilateral trade turnover between Ukraine and Tanzania in 2024 amounted to USD 11.11 million, which marks a 220% increase compared to 2023 (USD 5.05 million). This growth in trade is likely linked to the adaptation of exporters and traders to new conditions.
Ukrainian exports to Tanzania in 2024 totaled USD 5.69 million (a 526% increase compared to 2023 – USD 1.08 million), while imports amounted to USD 5.42 million (a 136% increase compared to 2023 – USD 3.97 million), resulting in a positive trade balance for Ukraine of USD 0.27 million.
Ukraine exported to Tanzania: sunflower oil (USD 4.20 million or 73.81% of exports), margarine (USD 116,000 or 2.1%), other food products (USD 360,000 or 6.5%), and machinery and mechanical equipment (USD 34,000 or 0.7%).
Ukraine imported from Tanzania: tropical fruits (USD 1.27 million or 23.4% of imports), raw tobacco and tobacco waste (USD 2.01 million or 37%), coffee (USD 1.24 million or 22.8%), and fish and fish products (USD 60,000 or 1.1%).
According to the National Bank of Ukraine, as of 31 December 2024, there were no investments from Ukraine to Tanzania or from Tanzania to Ukraine.
